It is reported that the Italian authorities plan to carry out civil engineering works on several railways in August. This will result in the temporary closure of some ports and inland multimodal transport connections.

Global freight forwarding giant Kuehne+Nagel announced on its official website that Italian authorities have closed the surrounding areas of Parma due to damage to railway infrastructure. It is expected that by July 21st, there will be significant delays and movement restrictions for containers entering and exiting from nearby ports.

It is expected that railway transportation services will be interrupted until September 9th. The railway connection of Genoa Port will also be affected by the civil engineering projects in July and August, as follows:

      -PSA Genoa Pra Terminal:

From July 6th to August 4th, 40'HC cargo will be restricted.

From August 10th to 18th, railway connections will be completely suspended. The route between Genoa and Milan will only be operated by trucks.

      -PSA Sech Terminal:

The closure of the railway hub between August 5th and September 8th will result in a disruption of the railway connection to the terminal. All cargo transportation entering and exiting the port will be completed solely by trucks.

      -GPT Terminal:

The closure of the railway hub between August 5th and September 8th will result in a disruption of the railway connection to the terminal.

Starting from July 26th, the terminal will no longer accept railway services for pick-up/delivery. All operations entering and exiting the port will only be carried out by truck.

Therefore, the lack of railway services and the limited availability of alternative railway routes will limit the availability of trucks.

Finally, Deutsche Bahn stated in the announcement that the inland ports near Milan (but not limited to this area) are very congested. Due to the reduced railway connections at the port of Genoa, delays are expected to occur.
